22 miles, 1400" elevation. Suitable for advanced beginners and above.  Gravel roads with gentle hills and a few short steeper climbs.

Have you been wondering what all this fuss is about gravel riding? Join us to explore gravel riding on this scenic loop out of Bluemont,VA (Loudon County) and find out for yourself. You will experience low traffic roads along the scenic countryside. We’ll see plenty of horses, a few goats, fantastic old stone walls, scenic churches and graveyards, and beautiful small communities like Unison. The gravel is well packed for the most part, with just a few bumpy sections. Come along and give it a try!

The route is 21.6 miles with 1400 feet of elevation. This is a reverse ride of the Bluemont gravel some of you previously might have done with WWO. This is a ride for advanced beginners and above. There are primarily gentle hills with just a few short, steeper ups and downs. Riders say the 21 miles on gravel feels like about 30 miles on the road. You must be comfortable handling some uneven terrain and should have tires that are at least 35mm, preferably with some textured tread. Gravel bikes, road bikes with 35mm+ tires, hybrids with 35mm+ tires, or mountain bikes are all options. The ride is about 70% on unpaved roads.

There will be a leader and sweep, and no one will be left behind.

There is limited space, so please register early. This ride is free for Members but you must register.

35 miles, 2000 feet elevation.  Scenic rural roads with several challenging climbs. For Intermediate and Advanced riders.

Leaving from Riley’s Lock, we will explore the western reaches of the Montgomery County Agriculture Reserve along low-traffic roads, passing working farms, cornfields and woodlands. The ride begins with two climbs that will get your heart pumping with a few more challenging hills for good measure before we end. But it’s well worth the effort! We’ll enjoy two climbs and a long downhill on Mt. Nebo Road before ending with the rollers on River Road. This ride is suitable for intermediate riders (who like hills) and advanced riders. As with all our rides, there will be a leader and a sweep, and no one will be left behind.

After the ride, we invite you to join us in collecting trash along Riley's Lock Road, the "Rustic Road" that WWO has adopted as part of the County's program to preserve historic and scenic roadways and keep them litter free.

After you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation email with additional event details and start location.

There is limited space, so please register early. Although this ride is FREE for Members, you do need to register.
