5.5 miles, 3 rating. Suitable for advanced beginners.  Follow the first battle trail into forested areas, rolling farmland, woods, and alongside the meandering Bull Run stream.

The first major battle of the American Civil War, fought on July 21, 1861, saw the convergence of Federal forces and Confederate troops near Manassas Junction. The site of a major railroad depot, the Federal forces hoped to seize the junction to prevent Confederate troops from using the railroads to resupply and transport troops.

Henry Hill was the site of intense fighting during the First Battle. You can explore the mile loop after the hike to learn more. We will make our way through forests over to the Stone Bridge and follow Bull Run stream up to Matthews Hill. Both areas were witness to the first shots fired of the battle. We continue over farmland towards the Stone House. If the red flag is up, then we can explore inside. Otherwise, we'll make our way back to the visitor center.

Note, there are 2 major road crossings, a couple of stream crossings and we may have to utilize or be close to active equestrian trails.

Trails conditions are a mix of mowed grass paths, forest trails, and dirt roads. Much of the trail is open and sun protection is recommended. Grassy areas are tick-prone and long pants/sleeves along with insect repellent are advised.

A furry friend is optional but if you decide to bring your dog then please be sure they are well behaved, fully vaccinated and on tick preventative medication. Your dog must remain on a leash no longer then 6 feet.

As with all WWO hikes, there will be a leader and a sweep, and no one will be left behind.

After you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation email with additional event details and start location.

There is limited space, so please register early. Although this hike is FREE for Premium Members, you do need to register.

5.5 miles. Suitable intermediate to advanced hikers.

Nestled in the heart of Virginia's Piedmont, Sky Meadows offers sweeping views of pastoral farms, charming vineyards, and rolling hills that stretch toward the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Whether you're hiking under a canopy of fiery foliage or pausing at a scenic overlook, each trail invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and connect with nature's seasonal splendor.

We utilize several trails, including the Appalachian Trail, to loop together 5.5 miles as we traverse forests, meadows, and ridgelines. We have a nice warm up before we start our one and only climb of about 1,000 feet. Good to get it out of the way and begin a wonderful journey through a tapestry of golden meadows and vibrant woodlands as autumn paints the landscape in rich hues.

As with all WWO hikes, there will be a leader and a sweep, and no one will be left behind.

After you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation email with additional event details and start location.

Join the WWO Virtual Book Club & Social!  Offered virtually so all can join, we gather quarterly to socialize and discuss a book around the theme of women in the outdoors.

This quarter’s book is Coffee First, Then the World, a memoir by Jenny Graham:

In 2018, amateur cyclist Jenny Graham left family and friends behind in Scotland to become the fastest woman to cycle around the world. Alone and unsupported, she crossed the finish line at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin four months later, smashing the female record by nearly three weeks.

With infectious wit and honesty, Jenny brings readers into her remarkable Round the World adventure, as she takes on four continents, 16 countries – and countless cups of coffee. Her journey swerves from terrifying near road collisions in Russia and weather extremes in Australia to breathtaking landscapes in Mongolia and exhilarating wildlife encounters in North America. Tight on time and money, she resorts to fixing her bike on the fly, sleeping on roadsides and often riding through the night to stay on track and complete her mission.

As she battles physical and mental challenges to race against the clock, Jenny gradually opens up to the joy of the adventure and all its daily discoveries. She gives in to her impulse to connect with people, making friends with strangers across the globe and embracing new cultures.

Coffee First, Then the World is her account of a record-breaking ride, and how one woman and a humble bike conquered the world.

Come join a community of women who share the outdoors in all ways possible!   The Zoom logon information will be provided to you in an email the day before the meeting.
